January Book Review : There’s More to Life Than This

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been listening to Theresa Caputo’s There’s More to Life Than This (as read by Caputo herself) and I’ve been loving it. You may recognize the name from TLC’s Long Island Medium, or perhaps you recognize the bling, big hair, and obnoxiously long nails pictured above. While the cover of the book appears superficial, this is another classic tale of how “you can’t judge a book by its cover”.

In There’s More to Life Than This, Caputo writes about her life as a medium and how it all came about, shares tales of connecting with other’s loved ones who have passed, and learning to recognize every day signs that your loved ones are with you. For me, however, I got the most pleasure listening to Caputo speak of spirituality, every day blessings, and seeing the big picture. Not to sound as though I drank the koolaide, but it made me see life from a different angle, one of enlightenment and new perspective.

In one chapter Caputo speaks of the information that she’s concluded based on her many readings. She talks about how spirit has told her that everyone has a lesson they are meant to learn in life and that everything happens not only for a reason, but as a lesson to help teach us our life’s goal.

“I’m under the impression that you have one main lesson to learn in each lifetime with many smaller teachings tucked into that journey. They include compassion, patience, friendship, selflessness, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, self-control, and unconditional love.”

This made me think of tough things like anxiety, anger, frustration, loss and how they are all lessons. When I look at them as lessons they no longer seem tough, they seem more like a challenge I need to conquer to learn a greater lesson. The other day I was thinking specifically about something that was giving me a lot of anxiety and in my head I was able to work out what I thought the lesson was and all of a sudden the anxiety didn’t seem as strong; I was owning my own thoughts and learning a little bit of self-control.

Caputo also talks of blessings and being aware of the smallest of blessings,

“There are also countless blessings of living in a physical body because God wants us to enjoy our time here both by ourselves and with each other. He’s not a tiger God determined to be strict, practical, and over focused on learning and achievement. For one, he’s given your body five senses because they can bring you amazing happiness if you stop to recognize them as they occur. Petting your dog, kissing your partner, eating a slice of lemon meringue pie, smelling a hydrangea, watching the snow fall, hearing a child laugh – all of these things are a warm hug for your soul.”

Do you ever think about what your lessons in life might be? xoxo ‘n lols, crystal
