To continue with our charity posts this week, I thought I’d highlight some local volunteering opportunities around The City of Oaks! The holidays are the perfect time to volunteer your time or donate to local charities to help families in our community who have been less fortunate this year.
I found Turkeys for the Triangle via their Twitter page and I immediately knew I wanted to include it in this post. It is something that anyone can do regardless of time commitment and there’s a chance to win a cool prize!
All you have to do is go to their website [turkeysforthetriangle.com] and buy a raffle ticket. That’s it! 100% of their proceeds goes towards buying turkeys for people in the Triangle. On December 19th, they will draw names and you could win one of their awesome prizes. Either way, you helped out a family in need and that is awesome.
The Green Chair Project was co-founded by two real estate stagers in 2010 who realized that some people just have too much stuff! Their solution was to reach out to households in the area who are willing to donate their unused items to others who may not have enough. The Green Chair Project accepts donations of clean, gently-used household items that are ready to go out the door (i.e. not in need of repair) and they sell them at a fair price to those who are referred to them by partner agencies. The Project helps those individuals and families establish themselves in an affordable and respectable way. They are always accepting donations and contributions and have several volunteer opportunities available.
Make sure you read their detailed list of acceptable and not acceptable items before you plan to donate.
The Raleigh Rescue Mission is always a fantastic place to spend time volunteering. In our community, there are many men, women, and children without homes and in need of the help that the Raleigh Rescue Mission can give. During the holidays, they have a variety of opportunities for those looking to give back. Throughout the year, they also several ways you can give back, including donations and hosting a drive.
A really fun and different way to get involved this holiday season is to participate in the Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis. Get dressed up in a holiday-themed costume, tie jingle bells to your shoelaces, and run or walk the 5k route to help fight arthritis. You can also be entered to win one of two $100 Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse gift certificates for every $100 you raise! They will be given out at the end of the race and you must be present to win.
Do you volunteer around the holidays or throughout the year? If so, where do you help out?
