Crystal and I have mentioned a few times on the blog that we choose to take donations to Goodwill® after cleaning out our homes and closets. For me, it’s the only option. Growing up, we always had a donation pile. We would take our donations at least every season, and often a few more times throughout the year. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized that Goodwill® was an essential part of the community and it wasn’t until just a few weeks ago that I found out how far my donations could go.
Currently, Goodwill® is partnering with the Ad Council to launch a brand new series of PSAs, including the adorable one above, to show how just by donating a few boxes of items we can help our neighbors and our communities. “Donate stuff. Create jobs.” It’s that simple.
To get more of an idea of what my donations can do, I used the Impact Calculator on Goodwill®‘s Donate website and, based on my latest drop off of about 3 bags of clothes, 1 box of books, and 1 box of DVDs, I found out that the items that I donated could provide 4.5 hours of career counseling or 6.8 hours of on-the-job training. It’s an incredible and necessary resource for people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face other challenges to finding employment. And, Goodwill® is the leading nonprofit provider of job training programs and career services in the United States and Canada. Knowing how my items will benefit others after they’re dropped off will make cleaning my house a little more enjoyable!
